Giant building mesh net in the heart of the city centre
Mesh construction netting is a popular raw material for advertising purposes. Thanks to its porous structure, excellent breathability and light weight, it is an ideal solution for large surfaces.
Numerous examples of its use can be seen across the country, but perhaps one of the most spectacular is the mesh net placed on the remaining façade elements of the former MDF headquarters building, in the heart of the city centre (in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Bem Square).
After many years of uncertainty, the dilapidated and undignified Radetzky Barracks — which later served as the headquarters of the MDF — is being reborn. In place of the now-functionless building, a hotel and office complex is being constructed that pays tribute to the past, preserves genuine values, and will finally breathe new life into Bem Square and its surroundings. The designers were determined to retain the imposing main façade of the building; construction therefore continued with the façade propped up by custom-built latticed steel beams. An accurate survey of the scaffolding was a crucial task, as the special steel structure provides the conditions for safely installing and securely mounting the net over the long term.
The survey carried out using a cherry picker gave the dimensions to be manufactured with almost centimetre-level precision. The survey, sizing and modification of the steel structure took approximately one month in total. Simultaneously, the graphic design of the 1,500 m² material was also underway.
The graphic design is none other than the architectural drawing featured in the renovation plans — all in a gigantic 1:1 scale. The protective net, made from 4 segments, was digitally printed with UV-resistant ink, giving it a potential lifespan of more than 3 years.
The end result: more than 12 rolls of Igepa-brand 330 g/m² carrier-type PVC Mesh netting.
A larger hall was required for the finishing work, as the main façade is more than 50 metres wide and 17 metres at its highest projection.
After completion, the installation — originally planned to take 3 days using a cherry picker — was finished in just two days, with 15 people working on site to achieve the flawless end result.
The installation of the enormous print was ultimately completed in 2 days with the help of a cherry picker. The graphic design, printing and finishing of the giant net, as well as its installation, were all carried out by Molino Reklámügynökség Kft.
